We were tasked at evoking the hustle and bustle of Indian street market restaurants, found in ally-ways across India, rich in produce and filled with tables. We created a store-like interior where artisanal products sit within cubbies, with an abundance of tables, custom ottomans that you pull up and custom chair like banquettes that are commonplace in Indian restaurants. Marigolds and plants hanging from a tin ceiling with hand-made tiles at the bar create the atmosphere of a bazaar. The colors we used throughout were in harmony with strong elements of the cuisines the traditionally uses mustard. As always, we seek to pay homage to the traditions of the chef and the region (Bengal) without being literal and ensure the design represents the local scene, in this case a multi-ethnic neighborhood in Brooklyn. Thoughtful abstraction of concepts is our hallmark and can be seen throughout the design of Masalawala.
